Me and my tiny, but very productive, greenhouse!

The power of nature

Space to Grow was inspired by my experience as a teacher, working with young people in a school during Covid, and also my personal journey through grief. In an unstable, frightening world, connecting with nature was a source of solace and purpose; for me and my students . I believe that gardening is incredibly empowering. Connecting with nature instils practical skills, develops confidence, builds resilience and, of course, respect for the natural world. Crucially, gardening has the capacity to build communities and it is this aspect that has reinforced my conviction that gardening, and being outside, should be available to everyone. This led me to set up Space to Grow in 2022. Every year, it has evolved, and I am looking forward to where it will take me in 2026!

Grow, Learn, Thrive

We want to empower schools and their wider communities in Birmingham to grow fruit and vegetables, herbs and flowers. We live in an intensely urban environment but the natural world is almost always within our reach. Over the last few years, my belief in the positive power of connection with nature has been reinforced daily. Ultimately, we all benefit as we attempt to increase the biodiversity of the area in which we live and work. Even a few containers of flowers, a couple of trees or raised bed of herbs can make a difference.
